Oakland Retrofit “Staple-Up” Underfloor Radiant Heating
Heating Experts Dedicated to Your Comfort
Underfloor radiant heating is, by far, the most comfortable form of space heating. In new construction, where the plan allows, putting tubing in the concrete is the preferred way to install radiant tubing, but there is an alternative that works really well on suspended floors. In times past, the PEX radiant tubing was stapled to the underside of the subfloor, hence the name “staple-up”. The industry has developed and there are now many systems that work well for retrofit radiant floors.
With ‘staple-ups’, the tubing loops are attached to the subfloor, a reflective plate or foil is placed below the tubing, and foil-faced insulation is placed beneath that. This system allows the heat to be transmitted through the floor, some of it conducted so that you feel the warmth in your feet, but most of the heat is delivered as infra-red and bounces off the surfaces in the room, heating the whole space.
The team at Big Blue Plumbing offers services for retrofit “staple-up” underfloor radiant heating systems in the Oakland and Alameda area. We have over two decades of experience and understand the complexities of these installations and will make sure yours is done in the most professional manner.

Common Questions About Radiant Heating
If you’re a homeowner considering radiant heating, you probably have quite a few questions. A few of the common questions we’ve included below, but we are always here to answer any other questions you may have. Every home and homeowner is different and radiant heating may or may not be best for you. We’re happy to offer our expertise to help you make your decision.
Will the heat warp my hardwood floors?
No, not if it is well-aged or acclimated to the heat. Actually, the sun shining through the window will make the wood hotter than the radiant ever will.
Is it noisy?
There are comments on the internet about how noisy staple-up can be. Noise is part of the reason we no longer use the staple method. Systems that allow some movement in the pipe eliminate most sound concerns. I do always caution our clients that some noise is possible, even with our best efforts, but most of our systems are completely silent.
