Earthquake Gas Shut-Off Valve Services in Oakland
Emergency Preparedness for Earthquakes in California
Living in California, we always need to be prepared for an earthquake. There are various precautions to take, but one thing homeowners don’t always think about is shutting off their gas following one of these acts of nature. Big Blue Plumbing can’t express how important it is to take this precaution. If there is a major earthquake, your gas pipes can break and cause a fire in your home. In fact, this is one of the main reasons for damage to homes following an earthquake. We are happy to offer earthquake gas shut off valve services in Oakland, Alameda, and the surrounding communities.
In order to be prepared for an earthquake, you should:
- Create an emergency plan for your family – and practice it
- Have an emergency earthquake preparedness kit, which would include everything you need to take care of yourself and your family for a minimum of three days
- Know where your gas shut-off valve is

What to Do When an Earthquake Occurs
We all probably think we know what to do during and after an earthquake. However, because they always take us by surprise, many of us tend to initially panic and run around, checking on our kids and pets, and getting out of the home. Even if you do remember to turn off your gas, if there is damage to your home, it could be difficult or dangerous to do so. If you’re not home, you’ll need someone to turn it off for you. Give Big Blue Plumbing a call and we’ll take care of it for you.

Automatic Gas Shut-Off Valves
One way to protect your home in the event of an earthquake is with an automatic gas shut-off valve. The installation of this device is relatively easy and can, in most cases, be installed right near the meter. There are several makes and models of these valves, and they all operate similarly. If there is an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater, this valve will close, meaning your homes appliances that operate via gas won’t work.
Once the danger has passed, you’ll have to reset the shut-off valve, which will not require you to call the gas company. Any pilots in your home will need to be relit. Once your gas is flowing again, you should still check for leaks in case your gas lines were disrupted during the quake. If you’re not sure if you have a leak, you can give Big Blue a call and we’ll asses your home and property.
