Is Tankless Right for You?
There are some things to understand about tankless hot water heaters:
- The number one issue is that it can take longer for you to get hot water than you are used to and this can cause concerns about wasting water, particularly in a drought.
- The unit must be sized and located properly in order to give you the hot water you are expecting.
- It is important to avoid long pipe runs with tankless heaters to avoid having to wait a long time for your water to get hot. To avoid maintenance issues and to ensure you get the maximum life expectancy from your tankless water heater, the correct gas pipe sizing is crucial.
- The oddly named “Cold Water Sandwich” occurs when water in the pipe is already hot and you turn on the faucet or shower and hot water comes out, but you are starting the firing process at the heater anew, which causes a few seconds of cold water to come through the pipe before the new hot water is delivered.
These “quirks” with a tankless water heater are easily overcome and I do not know of anyone who would switch from a tankless to a traditional tank.
The Cost of Going Tankless
The initial investment when installing a tankless water heater is increased over the cost of a traditional unit, but as the life span is longer, the running costs are lower, and the warranty is so much better, if you plan on living in your home for more than 8 years, it typically is a better investment.
